Smart Banking Mobile Application

01/THE CHALLENGE

Project Overview:

The bank wanted to move beyond a basic "check balance, make transfer" mobile app toward a genuinely smart banking experience — one that understands a customer's spending patterns, proactively surfaces useful information (low balance warnings, unusual transactions, upcoming bill due dates), and makes everyday banking tasks near-instant. The project covered a full rebuild of the mobile app across iOS and Android, backed by new personalization and notification infrastructure.

Challenges

  • Fragmented backend services.

Account data, card management, transfers, and notifications lived in separate legacy systems with inconsistent APIs, some of which weren't designed for real-time mobile use.
  • Personalization without overreach.

Customers wanted useful insights, not a surveillance feeling — the team had to be careful about which data-driven suggestions felt helpful versus intrusive.
  • Biometric and security trade-offs.

Balancing fast, frictionless login (Face ID/fingerprint) against strict session security and fraud-prevention requirements.
  • Offline and low-connectivity handling.

Many customers used the app on unreliable mobile networks, so the app needed to degrade gracefully rather than fail outright when connectivity dropped mid-transaction.
  • Two platforms, one experience.

Needed iOS and Android parity without doubling the development and QA effort, while still respecting each platform's native conventions.
  • Trust and error tolerance.

As with any banking app, a bug affecting a balance display or a transfer confirmation has outsized consequences on customer trust, so testing rigor had to be much higher than typical consumer apps.

02/ELARA'S APPROACH

Objective

The bank's goals for the project were to:

  • Turn the mobile app into the primary banking channel for the majority of customers, reducing reliance on branches and call centers for routine tasks.
  • Introduce "smart" features: personalized spending insights, proactive alerts (low balance, unusual activity, bill reminders), and simple budgeting tools.
  • Make core actions (transfers, bill pay, card controls) fast enough to complete in a few taps, with biometric authentication removing friction without compromising security.
  • Build a foundation flexible enough to keep adding features (savings goals, micro-investments) without re-architecting the app each time.
  • Maintain full compliance with banking security and data-protection requirements throughout.

Solution

  • Cross-platform app built for iOS and Android from a shared codebase, with platform-specific handling only where native conventions or APIs required it.
  • Real-time transaction feed and spending insights, powered by a new data pipeline that categorized transactions and surfaced patterns (e.g., "you've spent 20% more on dining this month") without requiring the customer to do manual tagging.
  • Proactive alerts engine for low balances, unusual transactions, and upcoming bill due dates, with customer-configurable thresholds and channels (push, SMS, email).
  • Biometric-first authentication (Face ID/fingerprint) layered over a secure token-based session model, with step-up authentication (PIN/OTP) triggered automatically for higher-risk actions like adding a new payee.
  • One-tap core actions — transfers, bill pay, card freeze/unfreeze — redesigned to minimize steps, with clear confirmation states so customers always know an action succeeded.
  • Offline-tolerant design, caching recent account data locally and clearly indicating when displayed data might be stale, rather than showing a blank or broken screen on poor connectivity.
  • Modular feature architecture, so new smart features (budgeting, savings goals) could be added as self-contained modules without touching the core transaction/auth flows.

03/DELIVERED OUTCOMES

Outcome

  • 65% of routine banking tasks shifted to mobile, reducing branch and call-center volume for transfers, bill pay, and balance inquiries.
  • Average session time for core actions dropped by half, from roughly 90 seconds to under 45 seconds, driven by one-tap flows and biometric login.
  • 35% increase in weekly active users within six months of launch, attributed largely to proactive alerts drawing customers back into the app.
  • Customer-reported trust score rose from 7.0 to 8.9 (out of 10) in post-launch surveys, with alerts and spending insights cited as the most valued new features.
  • Fraud-related support calls dropped 20%, credited to faster unusual-activity alerts prompting customers to catch issues earlier.
  • App store ratings improved from 3.4 to 4.6 average, with reduced crash rates and faster load times frequently mentioned in reviews.
